Our Statement:
The following information is what we have found works well with our chinchillas. We have gotten most of our information from breeders/owners who are more experienced with chins than we are.

One of our cages.
This is a cage we bought from JoAnn.
  Cages:
There are many types of cages available. The larger the cage the better with a minimum size of 2'x2'x2'. The wire mesh is very important. For adult chins the wire mesh should be 1"x1". For kits the wire mesh should be 1/2"x1", any larger and the kits could escape. If you choose a wire mesh bottom it should be 1/2"x1/2". I use Aspen bedding in the bottom of my cages. Never use cedar, this can be deadly to chins. Be sure to change your chins cages weekly.

Temperature:
You should keep your chins in an area where the temperature is between 60 degrees and 70 degrees. DO NOT exceed 75 degrees. Chins do not sweat or pant to be able to cool themselves. Therefore, temps above 75 degrees can cause heat stroke, resulting in death.

Diet and Treats:
Chins need pellets, hay, and water in their diets. I prefer Mazuri pellets mixed with Calf Manna. I also add a samll amount of old fashioned oatmeal with it. My chins love this and are striving on it. I use ceramic food dishes as they are harder to tip over. I use loose Timothy hay along with Alfalfa hay cubes. They get fresh water daily. I give my chins a treat a day. They like raisins, dried banana chips, and yogart chips. You can also give them craisins, small pieces of apple, and dried papaya. But remember, no matter how cute your chin looks at you keep the treats at one a day. Too many can be bad for them.
